What is BOTOX?

What is Botox? Botox is derived from botulinum toxin and reduces wrinkles and fine lines by temporarily relaxing the muscle. The most common area of treatment is frown lines between the eyes but usage in other areas is common. It may also be used to treat excessive underarm sweating.

How does the treatment work? Botox temporarily reduces the muscular contractions that cause wrinkles resulting in the overlying skin becoming smoother. It is most effective at smoothing the lines caused by years of moving these muscles on a regular basis. Several tiny Botox injections are placed directly into the muscles responsible for these lines and wrinkles.

Is Botox safe? Botox is very safe with few side effects. Rare side effects may include headache, flu symptoms and temporary eyelid droop.

Will there be any downtime? You should refrain from vigorous exercise or lying flat for 4-6 hours following treatment but may otherwise resume normal activities. Botox has no downtime and little to no pain or discomfort. Results can be seen within 7-14 days following only one session.

How long does a Botox treatment last? A Botox treatment will generally last for three months and depends on the number of areas injected and the size of the treated areas. Maintenance treatments every few months are recommended for longer lasting results.

How does the treatment feel? The only discomfort is a slight pin-prick sensation from the small needle injecting the Botox. While usually not necessary, ice or a topical anesthetic may be applied prior to treatment.

Who should avoid Botox? Botox should not be injected if you have an infection at the site, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or with certain neurological conditions. Please inform the practitioner before receiving Botox

What are the limitations of Botox? Botox is not a permanent answer to reducing wrinkles. Results may also vary and rarely problems with asymmetry may occur.
